Tribology is defined as the science and engineering of interacting surfaces. It involves studies of friction, wear, lubrication, adhesion, hardness etc of mechanically interacting surfaces. The engineering applications of tribology include almost all types of machineries in which the machine components face sliding, rolling, erosion etc.
Examples are: bearings, gears, seals, tyres, brakes, engines, power transmission, cam and follower, material handling, two-phase fluid flow, pumps etc.
Our research group endeavours to study tribological phenomena encountered in nano-tribology and bio-tribology which have applications in the fields of MEMS, Magnetic Data Storage, Human body joints, high performance bearings, green tribology etc. We bring innovative solutions in tribology through hard/soft coatings, nanolubricants, nano/micro-texturing and various types of surface modifications.
Facilities in Tribology Lab
Pin on Disk Tribometer
The pin on disk tribometer is designed by IIT Delhi and developed by Invogineering Pvt Ltd. Tribometer available in the laboratory can be used for dry and lubricated sliding conditions to evaluate the tribological performance of bulk material, coating and lubricants. Ball or pin can be used as a counterface which slides against the disk. Vey low to high contact stresses can be generated by using the loading arrangement provided on the tribometer.
Dip Coater
Dip coater is designed by the IIT Delhi and developed by Invogineering Pvt Ltd. Dip coater available in the laboratory can be used to coat specimen of any shape. Dip coater gives the uniform coating.
Hot Plate with Magnetic stirrer
It can be used for agitating or mixing the liquid. It also includes with a provision for heating the liquid. Heating of the liquid is possible upto 500 C.
Hot Air Oven
Hot air oven available in the laboratory can be used for any type of specimen with size less than 6 inch. The maximum temperature that can be attained in the oven is upto 450 C.
Scratch Tester
This is used to check the durability of the coating which we design in our lab. The sliding tip having various angle 30°, 45°, 60° and 90° may be varied for this purpose.
Air Plasma Cleaner
This is an essential equipment for performing research at micro and nano scales. This is used to clean the ultra clean the surface and thus activating it by removing contaminants.
Polishing Machine
This is required for polishing the metal surface which may be utilized for applying coating or visualizing grain structure.
